Orvieto

Orvieto is an ancient city dating back to the times of pre-Roman Etruscan civilisation.  It lies perched on the flat summit of a volcanic bluff, etched out of soft Tufa stone. From afar Orvieto forms a dramatic skyline.

Although you can drive up to the city, we chose to ride up on the 587m funicular.

The town has a peaceful, quiet feel and once you're up there inside the city walls its easy to forget you're perched on the volcanic bluff.

The Cathedral or Duomo dates back to the 1200's and is intricately carved out of travertine with highlights of gold and green basalt.

The level of detail is incredible and it's not until you focus on just a small part of the front facade that you truly appreciate the workmanship and skill that has gone into its production.
