Today's trip...
Monteriggioni is only 7km from the villa
and it is my favourite town so far. Built early in the 13th century Monteriggioni is small and neatly contained within a huge defensive wall that was built to withstand attacks from rival towns Siena and Florence. 14 towers used as lookouts still stand and
you can wander over sections of the 8ft thick walls.

San Gimignano is a much larger town and far
more crowded. Again we just wandered around and our time here coincided with
Gelato time – like with the pizza we have not had a bad gelato experience J.
Daniel is hooked on limone and has had it on every single gelato, all versions have been yummy with the standout for sheer tangy sourness being in Orvieto. Emily has discovered Melone and has not looked back since. Jeremy always has chocolate, at least half of which ends up around his mouth and wiped on his t-shirt L.
After reading tales of woe about parking, we decided to leave the car on the outskirts of Florence and catch the local bus into the centre, and this where the window-shopping began.
Judging from the prices on display there wasn’t much point going in any of the shops as Florence appears to cater only for the seriously rich! Take, for example, the €90/kg for macarons or the €1,140 for a pair of crystal-studded stilettos.
And a few more sights .....
