Tue 9 Hiroshima / Kyoto

Started off the day with a 1.4km walk to Shukkeien gardens.  Ended up getting there before they even opened - not even sure how that happened.  The gardens were lovely - green and serene.

Then it was back to pack and catch the shinkansen to Kyoto.  Stinky hot when we arrived and so headed straight for our apartment where they very kindly let us in an hour early.  We rested and re-charged the batteries.

Ok - fess up time,  we've got an ongoing Five Crown challenge and have all developed the exceedingly naughty habit of choosing alcoholic drinks to have whilst playing.  The below lineup is no exception. Left to right. Emily's cheeky lemon soda at 7%, my grapefruit soda but 5%, Steve's stock standard beer at 4.5% and Daniel's outrageous lemon -196 concoction at a whopping 9% alcohol. These 4 drinks set us back around 650Y or $6.50.  WTH!!! 😝

After 5 Crowns we ventured out to Yasaka Shrine, which looked beautiful at dusk with all the lanterns lit up.

Then we took a stroll through the streets of Gion to Pontocho - a small alleyway lined with restaurants and bars.  We had dinner at a tiny izakaya off a side street with a wonderful host - just wish we'd grabbed a picture with him.
